📸 Spouting Horn | Kauai, Hawaii
📝 My Story
Spouting Horn is one of those quick and quirky stops that’s totally worth it — even if you only stay 10 minutes.
Located on Kauai’s southern coast near Poipu, this natural wonder is a blowhole where ocean waves rush under a lava shelf and shoot water high into the air through a small opening.
The sound is just as impressive as the sight — a deep hiss and roar as the water bursts upward!
It’s a super easy stop right off the road with a paved parking lot, and you’ll also find a few local craft vendors selling souvenirs nearby.
As a bonus, keep an eye out for the Autograph Tree near the Spouting Horn viewing area.
Its broad leaves are covered in names and dates — a long-standing tradition where visitors leave their mark (literally!). It’s almost like a badge of honor showing that you made it to this iconic spot on Kauai.
While Spouting Horn may not take hours to explore, it’s a fun and easy addition to your southern island itinerary — especially if you’re already enjoying Poipu Beach nearby.

💡 Pro Tip
If the vendors are open, it’s a great place to snag authentic souvenirs made by local artists — much better than airport gift shops!
📸 Photography Tip
Use a fast shutter speed (around 1/1000s) to freeze the water spray mid-air.
Or, for a dreamy, misty effect, use a tripod and slow it down to 1/30s — just be mindful of ocean spray on your lens!
🎉 Fun Fact
Hawaiian legend says that Spouting Horn is guarded by a giant trapped lizard whose cries and roars echo through the blowhole every time the ocean surges in!
The nearby Autograph Tree (a type of broadleaf tree) has naturally thick leaves — perfect for visitors to etch their names without harming the tree when done respectfully.
