📝 My Story
The Fabyan Windmill is a beautiful historic landmark along the Fox River and an easy place to spend a quiet afternoon outdoors.
We walked across the open field toward the windmill, then took our time exploring the surrounding property. The windmill is impressive up close, but some of my favorite views were from farther away, where the trees and wide grassy lawn helped frame it naturally.
There is much more here than just the windmill. Fabyan Forest Preserve has scenic walking and biking trails, peaceful fishing spots along the river, picnic areas, and plenty of open space. Across the bridge, visitors can also explore the Fabyan Villa Museum and Japanese Garden.
You could stop for an hour to see the windmill and take a few photos, or bring a picnic and turn it into a relaxing afternoon by the river.

📸 Photographer’s Note: Photograph the windmill from both near and far. The open field, mature trees, river, bridge, gardens, and old stone structures provide plenty of additional subjects.
🛐 Etiquette: Respect the historic structure, remain in public areas, and avoid blocking the trails while taking photographs.
🕰️ Best Time to Explore: Early morning or golden hour provides softer light and fewer distractions around the windmill.
♿ Accessibility: Fabyan Forest Preserve includes ADA-accessible trails. The outdoor area surrounding the windmill is easier to access than some of the historic attractions across the river.
💡 Pro Tip
Park on the east side of the river if the windmill is your main destination. Afterward, follow the trail across the bridge to see the Japanese Garden and Fabyan Villa Museum.
The preserve is large enough that it is worth looking at the map before visiting. The windmill, Villa, and Japanese Garden are not all located beside the same parking lot.
📸 Photography Tip
My favorite photographs were taken from the open field, using the surrounding trees and leaves to create a natural frame around the windmill. Step back and experiment with shooting through openings in the branches instead of photographing every view from directly in front of the building.
Walk around the entire property to find different perspectives. A wide-angle lens works well when you are close to the windmill, while a standard or short telephoto lens can compress the scene and isolate it between the trees.
If possible, visit during golden hour. The warm, low light brings out the texture of the wood and stone while adding depth to the surrounding trees and grass. Including people walking through the field can also help show the windmill’s impressive size.
🎉 Fun Fact
The five-story Fabyan Windmill stands 68 feet tall and was originally built by German craftsman Louis Blackhaus sometime between 1850 and 1860. It originally stood near present-day Lombard before George Fabyan purchased it and moved it to his Riverbank estate in 1914.
The windmill was later restored with the help of a Dutch millwright and reopened to the public in 2005. Its internal grinding machinery has also been restored, although it no longer produces flour.
⚠️ Before You Visit
The windmill’s exterior can be viewed whenever the preserve is open, but the inside is only accessible during scheduled tours. In 2026, the windmill is generally open on Sundays from noon to 3:00 p.m., June through September.
Tour dates and access can change, so check the official Fabyan Windmill page before making a special trip to see inside.
The Fabyan Villa Museum and Japanese Garden maintain their own seasonal schedules.
