Candy Canes
I’m going to be really upfront and honest right now.
Some of you may agree. Some of you may not.
But today, I spent the entire day with only one of my boys—and it was absolutely amazing!
Don’t get me wrong. I love both of my children more than anything. If one experiences something, I immediately want the other to share that same experience. They are equal in my eyes, and I couldn’t imagine another day without either of them in my life.
However, it was so nice to listen to just one child without being interrupted.
For those of you who don’t have multiple children, you probably don’t understand. If—or when—you have more, you will.
Trust me.
Taking advantage of this rare opportunity, Adventure Hudson and Daddy Day was soon set in motion!
Hudson couldn’t go to daycare, so he and I spent the day bonding. I loved it. I couldn’t tell you the last time I was alone with just one child when neither of us was sick.
We ran errands, made spaghetti, colored, and went grocery shopping.
I even had Hudson pick out Bennett’s birthday gift—which, I might add, is virtually impossible when you have two children. Try picking out a gift on behalf of one child without the other finding out.
Just saying...
We finally topped off the afternoon with—you guessed it—pictures.
I may or may not have found an outfit at Target that practically shouted, “Pictures!” But those are merely details.
The moral of the story is that it took only one simple candy cane to entice this little three-year-old to pose in the front entry closet for 15 minutes.
The blue one, of course.
Honestly, though, I think he would have done it without the candy cane. This kid loves the camera!
After another day of taking pictures with Dad, the afternoon came to an end.
It made me think about time in general: whom I spend it with and, more importantly, whom I don’t.
Sometimes we need to step outside our daily routines and see life from someone else’s perspective—especially that of our own children.
I’m a huge fan of family and face-to-face interaction, but we often get caught up in our daily work routines. We don’t always take a moment to step back and recognize what’s truly important.
So, here’s my honest advice:
If you have multiple children, spend time with each of them individually when you can.
I know how it made me feel. Who knows how it might make you feel—let alone them?
You might as well give your kids a candy cane too. They’ll lose those baby teeth anyway.
Totally kidding...
Well, kinda.
